Monkey Tree Pub

Monkey Tree Pub – 4025 Borden Street

The origin of the pub’s name came from a 60 foot high monkey puzzle tree that stood on the highest point of land at the pubs location. It was a natural beacon and landmark to the community. Unfortunately the tree itself was felled in the early nineties. The review below is based on my personal observations and experience. Best breakfast – restaurant review

Restaurant Name:  Monkey Tree Pub, Victoria, BC

Group:  2, arrived 11:00 am on Sunday, June 15.

Eggs benny (Chorizo special):  Eggs (small, cooked perfectly), hollandaise (slightly strong lemon/vinegar taste), chorizo (very good), english muffin (didn’t look or taste toasted), and aioli sauce (too vinegary).  Served with deep-fried cubed potatoes (excellent). No garnish.

Other items ordered:  Chorizo benny with fresh fruit (very fresh, good portion). Same taste experience as me. No gluten free options.

Average price/person:  $14 ($16 for special)

Pros:  Portion sizes were good and overall tasty. Nice surprise getting deep-fried cubed potatoes. The coffee was okay, and kept refilled (larger mugs would be nice). Servers were pleasant.

Cons:  It took 45 minutes to get our breakfast after ordering. Many tables that came in after us were served first. The waitress only came by to apologize for the lateness just a few minutes before she brought it out. There was too much lemon/vinegar in the aioli and hollandaise combination. If that had been toned down and the english muffins toasted, this would have been a very good meal.

Overall:  It was ok. We came in as the pub opened and had our choice of seats. It got very full within 30 minutes, but no one ever had to wait. Unfortunately, the service level was sporadic. The breakfast menu is small, but there’s enough variety. They should consider offering a gluten free bread option. Even though it’s a pub, one section is very bright and open, and a little quieter than the main area. The décor wasn’t remarkable. We heard positive things about the regular menu which is available as soon as they open.
